Marketing breakfast and Swap-n-Shop

With Early Registration for the 2012 annual conference open, we want to remind you to include the LMD Marketing Section breakfast scheduled for Tuesday morning, July 17, at 8AM. In addition to our virtual Swap-n-Shop, we have an exciting panel discussion planned, Using Social Media to Promote Libraries and Librarians. We’ve asked three extraordinary individuals to lead the discussion, building on their successes over the past few years, so that we can benefit from their unique perspectives as:

Social Media Marketing guru Melissa Giovagnoli, President of Networlding

Corporate Media Marketing officer Roger Tye, Director of Consumer Engagement at Allstate Insurance Co.

Our own Connie Crosby, Crosby Group Consulting.

As always, we thank the Advertising and Marketing Division (AMD) as a co-hosting SLA unit, and look forward to having their members participate in a lively discussion.

If you’d like to inspire others by having your marketing materials included in the virtual Swap-N-Shop, please use the online form to let us know that you’d like to contribute. Even if you are only thinking about contributing, please complete a form so that we will know what we might expect, how much material, and what we need to do at the breakfast to make this accessible to our members. It’s your contributions that make the Swap-N-Shop special!

We need final submissions by 1 May 2012.

Marketing Swap-n-Shop Breakfast update

We now have two great panellists lined up for the Marketing Section Breakfast and Swap-n-Shop, to be held at SLA conference on 17 July 2012, 8:00-9:30.

Melissa Giovagnoli is founder and president of Networlding, a social media consulting, coaching, implementation and integration firm. Melissa has spoken and published widely; her latest book is Fifty Ways to Better Social Media: Making Solid Connections That Create Dynamic Opportunities.

Connie Crosby  founded Crosby Group Consulting in 2008. Connie has a background in law librarianship, and teaches at iSchool Institute, University of Toronto, and SLA’s ClickU. Connie’s personal blog recently featured her ‘Top 5 Tips for Businesses Using Social Media‘, including ‘start small’ and ‘don’t build an “empty disco”‘.

There’s still plenty of time to submit your virtual and social-media based marketing materials for the Virtual Swap-n-Shop, that runs alongside the breakfast. Register your interest by December 31, 2011, and deliver your final submissions to us by May 1, 2012, to be entered into a drawing to have their marketing efforts reviewed by an expert in the field!

Let your work inspire others! Participate in LMD’s Virtual Swap-n-Shop

In the modern organization, users of your information service are no longer confined by physical location – they may be located far away from your physical library. As interaction becomes increasingly digital, new technologies and tools make it easier for us to be creative and push the bounds of the traditional library brochure, fact sheets, and “how to” guides that used to be distributed on paper. So, we want to know how you introduce, inform and promote:

  • Resources within it (and how to access them)?
  • The capabilities of your staff?
  • The benefits of using your services?

Do you have targeted approaches to new users? What strategies do you use to turn occasional users into habitual ones? Have you created a tutorial for using your library’s electronic resources? We want to see what you’ve done! Tell us how you use social media tools to keep in touch with your clients.

The LMD Marketing Section invites contributions for our VIRTUAL SWAP-N-SHOP to take place during the LMD Breakfast at this year’s annual conference in Chicago on Wednesday, July 18, beginning at 8:00AM. We will display the fruits of your labor—the best of the best—for your colleagues to view throughout the breakfast meeting. In addition, we are asking for a one-page/single screen summary of the tools you used, how you accomplished this marketing feat, and costs associated with it. Links to your virtual brochures, tutorials, etc., will be shared with colleagues who are not able to make the meeting on the new LMD Marketing Section site .

Please let us know of your intent to contribute by using the online form. Even if you are only thinking about contributing, please complete a form so that we will know what we might expect, how much material, and what we need to do at the breakfast to make this accessible to our members.

Early Bird Special! Those who announce their participation by December 31, 2011, and follow through by delivering their final submissions to us by May 1, 2012, will be entered into a drawing to have their marketing efforts reviewed by an expert in the field. Inquiries may be sent to LMD Marketing Section co-chairs, Bethan Ruddock (Bethan.Ruddock@gmail.com) or Barbie Keiser (Barbie.Keiser@gmail.com)

Marketing section Swap-n-Shop

The LMD Marketing Section Virtual Swap-n-Shop has happened physically – now it’s time for it to happen virtually!

The Swap-n-Shop was part of the LMD breakfast in Philly, along with the fantastic panel of Jane Dysart, Rebecca Jones and Stephen Abram, who discussed ‘Executing alignment and marketing yourself’.  We know the panel was brilliant, and you might not have had all the time you wanted to browse the Swap-n-Shop entries – but don’t worry! We’re posting all the submissions here, for you to admire, browse and play with to your heart’s content.

First up we’ve got a couple of YouTube videos – for NC LIVE, the North Carolina statewide online library service (submitted by Jill Robinson Morris) and the UCSD Science & Engineering library tour (submitted by SuHui Ho).  SuHui explains that the tour was developed to ‘demonstrate that we offer friendly, dependable, innovative staff, technology-advanced services, and a diversified space’.

Lesley Farmer submitted materials for two projects she’s been working on. First off, a poster and brochure to promote an IFLA professional report on ‘using research to promote literacy and reading in libraries: guidelines for librarians‘.  Lesley has also developed the K12 Digital Citizenship wiki, which has inspired a whole range of badges and other merchandise bearing the ‘Digital Citizen’ logo!

IEEE offer Xplore tutorials – 11 multi-language tutorials with in-depth captions and course notes in multiple languages. Submitter Ruth Wolfish explains that they are also easily understood by visibly or hearing impaired users.

Deborah Balsamo offered us a whole host of great material from the EPA National Library Network’s webinar-based National Training Program.  There’s a great overview of their offerings, and an explanation of the program.  There’s also a sample training form; examples of how they market their training on their listserv and on users’ desktops; and an example class handout.  We get a sneak peek inside their webinars with shots of the confirmation and thank you screens. Deborah also shared the survey they’re using to measure their effectiveness, and some of the feedback they’ve had.

We’d like to thank all of our contributors for sharing this wonderful material with us!  Want to get involved? Watch this space for news of our next Virtual Swap-n-Shop!  We’d love to feature your material.
