As David Weinberger points out in his new book, Too Big to Know, organizations today need to recognize the power of difference (fruitful disagreement), public learning (leaving tracks for others to follow & conversations to engage in), filtering information on the way and out (taxonomies and finding places for inclusion while embracing messiness) and opening a window so that the expert really is in the room. Our speakers discuss new opportunities for using our skills in different and exciting ways.

Sunday, June 9th 3:30 pm – 5 pm

And you’re at the epicenter. You’ve embraced the changes but how do you get everyone else on board? Change management communications calls for understanding how people change and how communications can affect change. Key communications components will be outlined and best practices will be shared.

Focus will be on lessons learned by affected libraries and information centers as well as guidelines for effective disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. Using social media during and after an incident will also be discussed.

“What could I do if my supervisor resists a change in job title to reflect increased responsibilities?”

Certainly, a boosting of job title presents a conundrum for a supervisor: On the one hand, he or she is grooming staff to grow; on the other hand, there could be a perception his or her own role is being eroded. Here’s how I would advise an employee:

If a business case document setting out the justifications for a job title enhancement (complete with recommendations from users/clients) has been submitted to the supervisor and copied to HR, then there is no secrecy. You could consider communicating to relevant audiences, for example by:

Adding a tag line to your email address to draw attention to a key work area (e.g. “Supporting your critical research – every day, any time”)

Arranging lunch-and-learn sessions with business teams to build credibility and gather recommenders

Mentioning to clients and users that “my title of X in fact covers Y. Please feel free to ask me for … ”

That said, it merits consideration whether the relationship with the supervisor warrants a frank discussion “what is the real reason you do not support a job title change for me?”. Understanding the motivation behind the decision to decline the request could point to reasons why efforts to build visibility outside the organization might be advisable.

“What are my options when my supervisor is not forthcoming with support for or information related to career growth?”

Let’s assume that the supervisor, rather than appearing to want to keep you where you are because you are such an excellent employee, is simply a “blank” when you ask about opportunities for advancement (within the organization or in more general terms over the long horizon). It is certainly understandable that a supervisor may not invest a great deal of energy in examining opportunities for career advancement for his or her staff members – why rock a boat sailing nicely? Good supervisors, however, safeguard their ability to keep good employees by doing what seems paradoxical – helping their staff members along in their careers.

Your options are fairly straightforward and center around building professional visibility inside and outside your organization (it is not impossible that external contacts may have relationships back inside your employer organization). Your avenues of exploration could include:

Finding out about information and knowledge roles in organizations similar or analogous to your own

Finding out about the career paths of others with qualifications similar to yours

Building skills in demand in contiguous professional domains (e-discovery, social media, etc)

Becoming the “mentee” of someone you trust outside your organization

The bottom line is that we are all personally responsible for our careers. It is a bonus if a supervisor helps, but we can accomplish a great deal by getting ourselves “out there” and building relationships with others – and letting it be clear we are keen on contributing to professional endeavors.

In any disrupted industry or profession, innovation is an essential response. As members of a disrupted profession, librarians require new strategies to realign what we do with the changed expectations of our employers. For librarians in corporations, government, law firms, medical facilities, higher education, and others, embedded librarianship is just such an innovative strategy. Many librarians are succeeding with embedded librarianship, but there are traps and pitfalls awaiting the unwary.

In this webinar, Dave will briefly survey the core characteristics of embedded librarianship, and discuss why it can be an effective strategy for aligning librarians’ work with the needs of their employers. He’ll then present some of the common traps and pitfalls, offering strategies for getting out of them – or avoiding them altogether.

David Shumaker is Clinical Associate Professor at the School of Library and Information Science, Catholic University of America (CUA). His research focuses on the development and successful implementation of new roles for librarians in all types of organizations, with a special emphasis on embedded librarianship. Prior to joining CUA, Dave was Manager of Information Services at the MITRE Corporation, leading corporate library, archives, and records management operations.

In 2008, he and his co-investigator, Mary Talley, were awarded the Special Libraries Association Research Grant for their project, “Models of Embedded Librarianship.” Project reports are available on the SLA website, and related articles have been published in Information Outlook, Library Journal, and Reference & User Services Quarterly. Last July, his book, The Embedded Librarian: Innovative Strategies for Taking Knowledge Where It’s Needed, was published by Information Today. He blogs at http://www.embeddedlibrarian.com
