SLA 2008 – some random quotes

Stephen Abram during the Leadership Development Institute session:

"It’s time to DO – to make things happen."

"The future goes to the people who invest in themselves."

Dave Snowden during the LMD / KM  spotlight session:

"Knowledge is only ever volunteered – it can’t be conscripted."

"If you have to ask how to create a knowledge sharing culture – you don’t have one."

"We know more than we can tell – we can tell more than we can write down."

Tesse Santoro at the Marketing Section breakfast:

"Ask for the opportunity.  Ask for what you want."

"Sell the NEED for the service – and the service will sell itself."

7 Steps to Sales (which we are hoping Tesse will expand on in the Marketing Section breakfast next year in DC):

  1. Preparation
  2. Introduction
  3. Questioning
  4. Presentation (up to this point, librarians do fine)
  5. Overcoming objections and neogiating (this is when the going gets tough – with these last few steps,  we’ve moved from marketing to sales – which is critical to our success and rarely done)
  6. Close and agreement
  7. Followup and fullfillment

From the Content Buying Inside Out session – in response to the Q: "What do you think is the single biggest threat to your success / our mutual success?"  A:

EBSCO:  The perception on the part of senior management in companies that there is no real value in content."

eBrary: DRM – the need to address DRM, to negotiate these rights – and to compromise.

Bill Noorlander:  The loss of understanding of the value of content – this is the raw material of a knowledge economy.

Susan Klopper:  Information illiteracy is rampant in the next generation.

Annual Business Meeting and Leadership Luncheon

Remarks from the Chair:

Again, I’d like to thank my team.  They are an incredible, dedicated, fun group of people and I’ve enjoyed working with them – of course, the year’s only 1/2 over so there’s more fun to come.  And I’d like to thank you for coming to our annual business meeting and leadership luncheon.  I consider the Leadership & Management Division to be the leading division of SLA.  We inspire innovative leaders – and I’m honoured to be your Chair.  We are in the process of preparing a new strategic vision and plan for the Division and we will be undertaking some new initiatives as part of our strategic plan.  So, keep you eyes open for new ways to benefit from your Leadership & Management Division membership.  I’ve put up my email address (juanita.richardson@cedrom-sni.com) – I’d love to hear from you.  Thank you.

Accessing Information — Solving the Unique Learning and Training Needs of Organizations

Corporations need to stay informed and having unlimited access to premium content that is unique to the needs of an individual organization is a trend that is likely to increase rather than
decrease. Corporate universities, the growth in corporate learning divisions and the creation of core competencies are emblematic of the important role information plays in corporate learning and training. Librarians and information professionals, by providing the latest information, have a unique role in guiding corporate learning.

EBSCO Publishing provides premium information resources that support corporate learning and training through the combination of Business Book Review® and Business Source® Corporate. These are resources that are frequently integrated into corporate portals and intranets or used through Learning Management Systems (LMS). The process involves the use of keyword and relevance feedback monitoring techniques along with an XML gateway for direct integration.

Business Book Review®
(BBR) summaries extract the key concepts of the best business books,
enabling executives and managers to quickly and easily keep abreast of
the latest in business intelligence & trends. Following a rigorous
selection process, expertly-written summaries are created for the top
business books published each year. The BBR library offers coverage of
hundreds of books with new summaries added weekly. For each book, BBR
provides written summaries in multiple lengths (300-, 600-, and
4,500-words) as well as audio versions (MP3 format) for many titles.

Business Source® Corporate
is designed to meet the diverse information needs of today’s companies. This database contains full text from nearly 3,000 quality magazines and journals, including sources ranging from general business periodicals to management publications. Additional sources include more than 1,400 country economic reports from EIU, Global Insight, ICON Group International, CountryWatch, etc.; more than 10,000 substantial company profiles; and 5,095 industry reports.

EBSCO provides customized assistance to incorporate content into an organization’s specific learning program, such as:

  • Customized mapping of select BBR summaries and relevant articles to corporate learning objectives/competencies
  • Targeted reading programs for all levels of leadership
  • Continuous mapping of new content to existing learning objectives
  • Summaries grouped according to relevant subject areas addressing all aspects of business skills development

Learners can link from the competency map directly into the full text of articles or appropriate book summary. The mapping process integrates learning content into LMS-driven or CLO-created learning objects. Having the content, knowing how it fits into the needs of a specific organization and providing the content from a corporate portal, LMS or easy to use interface, brings the information where it is needed and allows it to have an impact.

Leadership & Management Divisions events at the Annual Conference

Coming to the annual conference?  Of course you are!  Well, be sure to check out the events that LMD will be hosting in Seattle.  You can view the complete list, with descriptions here.  For those of you in the Consulting Section, I want to point out that Rebecca Jones and I (section co-chairs) are involved in Tuesday a.m. event geared specifically for our section members (and anyone else).  The event is:

Building Bridges,
Creating Partnerships

Tuesday, June
17, 2008

7:00 AM

Tickets: $5/member

Speakers: Rebecca Jones, Craig Wingrove

Moderator: Jill Hurst-Wahl

Join this interactive session featuring
speakers & discussion. The program starts with a consultant from a library
consulting firm, which partners with other consultants/consulting firms to gain
the specific skills or additional person power for projects and then hears from
an internal consultant within a larger company, which partners with other
departments and units to get things done. A facilitated discussion over
breakfast follows with clear steps to building creative partnerships and
building bridges to accomplish more.

We look forward to all of you there!

Blog post: Profligate (Recklessly wasteful)

Seth Godin, who will be one of the keynote speakers at the Annual Conference, has a good post about waste and I like the last sentence:

…as more customers change their worldview about waste, you need to consider who you’re talking to and what you’re saying.

I’m glad the SLA is going green.  Given his thinking, I don’t think I’d want him to come to a wasteful conference.  More importantly, I’m glad to see a marketer talk about wasteful packaging! Seth — you get two thumbs up!

BTW I’ve been asked recently about how Seth pronounces his last name.  Knowing that I’ve likely been mispronouncing it, I went to YouTube to find videos of him and others saying his name.  It is "Go-den".

That Dirty 4 Letter Word: SELL

Here’s a piece I found through Library Stuff on selling yourself internally to your clients. It speaks specifically to law librarianship but I’m sure the same principles apply in any corporate environment.  I feel very strongly that selling is one of those business skills that librarians are determined NOT to master – to our detriment.  And so I’m happy to say that Tesse Santoro, who will be Chair of our Marketing Section in 2008, is giving a talk in Seattle on "Selling Yourself & Your Skills".  Click on the link below, have a read and let me know – what do YOU think about selling?  Are you good at it?  Do you want to be?
